Premature Ejaculation
What is Premature Ejacultation?
Due to sexual stimulation, the brain signals the male reproductive organ to release semen. This process is called ejaculation. “Premature ejaculation” (PE) occurs when it kicks in before either the man or his partner expected it to. However, this definition is very subjective and the problem might not always be PE. Therefore, a medical professional must perform a proper diagnosis for this purpose.
This condition is classified into two types:
- Lifelong PE
In lifelong PE, the male experiences premature ejaculation almost all the time during lovemaking. This problem persists right from the time of the first sexual encounter. The most probable cause of lifetime PE is hormonal imbalance or problems with nerve signalling.
- Acquired PE
Generally, men face this type of PE after some form of disturbance in their mental or physical health. There are no problems with the sexual encounters in his past. One of the main causes of acquired PE is erectile dysfunction (ED).
Causes of Premature Ejaculation
Some of the factors listed below are what cause this condition:
- Psychological factors.
Some of the common psychological factors that may cause PE are:

- Guilt
- Lack of confidence
- Unrealistic expectations of sexual intercourse
- History of being subjected to sexual assault
- Relationship problems
- Hormonal imbalance
Testosterone is the hormone that is associated with male sexual health. However, studies about testorone levels in PE patients gave conflicting results. In essence, we can conclude that the levels of testosterone must be just right for healthy sexual vitality. Another hormone is prolactin, which is released after an orgasm. High levels of prolactin are found in events of early release. The imbalance of other hormones, like luteinizing, gonadotropin-releasing, cortisol, and thyroid hormones, is also linked with PE.
- Underlying disorders
Some of the physical problems that can lead to this condition are:
- obesity
- genetic predisposition
- high blood pressure
- type II diabetes, etc.
A common cause of premature ejaculation is erectile dysfunction (ED). Sometimes, treatment of ED can resolve the problem of early climaxing completely.

Another treatment option is behavioral therapy, which consists of sexual techniques to delay ejaculation. There are also certain medications used to improve erectile function.
